I’M MORE THAN A SWIMMING INSTRUCTOR

If you haven’t noticed by now, I’m completely obsessed with my job. It’s the best job in the world, hands down! It was something that I fell into by accident, but from the moment I started teaching swimming lessons, I was hooked. At 17 years old, I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life and after some time figuring out how to make that possible, I couldn’t be happier with what my career looks like now.

As a swimming instructor, I’m constantly tested to figure out ways to encourage my swimmers to understand how to be the best swimmers they can be. During my time in the pool, I get to develop methods of teaching that probably shouldn’t work because of how insane they are, but somehow manage to create the result I’m looking for in my swimmers form, or proficiency in water safety. After so many years, the work never gets old, but that’s not even the best part. What I love most about my job is who I get to be for my swimmers and their families.

When I teach a lesson, I’m obviously teaching swimming, but that’s just the medium I use to work on things that I know are vital for our children to become the best possible versions of themselves. Each lesson, I work on empowerment, confidence, creativity and trust. The best feeling in the world is having a nervous swimmer suddenly open up to the idea of doing something they originally would shy away from because they’ve learned to trust me and found excitement in how I’ve made the activity work for them. The phone calls and texts I’ve gotten about kids going home and telling their families how proud they are of themselves and how excited they are to try new things is what gets me up in the morning!

Above all else, my job gives me the chance to become whatever my swimmers need me to be in their lives. I get to be a coach, a friend, and most importantly, a superhero for them to look up to. If I’m not impacting my swimmers in a profound way that benefits different aspects of their lives, I’m not doing my job properly. I get to bring the best qualities of myself to my lessons each day and experience how those qualities shape the lives of the people around me. And this shows in the results I get during our time together. I couldn’t be more proud of the work, dedication and love my swimmers put in to what we do each day and I find myself looking forward to growing with them as an instructor. I learn from them just as much (if not more) than they do from me.

Being a swimming instructor can be so simple at the surface, but when you put everything you have into these swimmers, the impact it has on everyone involved is the most incredible thing to experience. My job is the most challenging, humbling and rewarding experience that I’ve had the pleasure of living through and I continue to look forward to seeing how my swimmers surprise me next and how we all grow together as a team.
